The Top 5 CES Trends That Will Impact Your Data Capability This Year

The Consumer Electronics Show brings together the world’s greatest innovators in technology and introduces the next generation of trend-setters every year in Las Vegas. While these innovations will offer a wide range of dynamic changes to our lives, it is crucial to understand how companies strategically use these technologies to their benefit.

I was able to spend time at CES this year; meeting with inspiring industry experts and discussing innovative consumer technology and data trends throughout the entirety of the week. And after attending various keynote speeches, panels, and exploring interactive products on the show floor, I shared my own personal feedback from the event during a live webinar, Data Trends: Live from CES, and elaborated these and other growing trends in the industry.

An overwhelming takeaway from CES this year was that data is a likelihood in so many of this year’s major innovations in technology. But how are businesses utilizing data to their advantage and in what ways is data setting companies apart in their fields?

Here are the top 5 trends from CES that will impact your business’ data capability in 2019:

 

1. The Rise of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence:

It’s hard not to discuss one of the conference’s largest trends in innovation; robotics and artificial intelligence. And while presenters at CES didn’t unveil any human-like robots (this year), many of the new AI offerings did give way to useful, everyday solutions for consumers; especially those that will change the way we live, work, and play.

What we saw from many of the launches were more practical versions of artificial intelligence, such as personal robot butlers, and voice-controlled assistant powered by Amazon Alexa and Google Assistance.

In terms of data and company prosperity, AI and robotics bring a new perspective on the longevity and impact of brands. According to Ginni Rometty, a CES speaker and CEO of IBM, nearly all jobs will be impacted in some way by artificial intelligence in the near future. So, as companies become more invested in AI and robotic solutions, it is critically important for them to understand how their actions will impact the skills gap in jobs.

 

2. Supercharging using 5G innovation

The next generation of digital communication, 5G, was on display throughout the week. Promising to provide lightning-fast speed and more accurate micro-connectivity to billions of devices across the world, 5G will offer major potential, especially for businesses in the manufacturing, agriculture, and retail sectors.

Creating uncapped capabilities in the industrial IoT, 5G will help companies send and receive information in new ways; especially in terms of critical customer data. It will also offer the capability to transforming companies, in every industry, into tech-driven forward thinkers.

This data will help to unleash new and exciting potential for companies and will give such enterprises what they need to create revolutionary products and inventions for their consumers. They’ll be able to do so by predicting changes in the markets and in consumer trends, and it will allow them to understand data on a much larger scale at nimble speeds.

 

3. Rapid Expansions of Smart Technology

While walking through the CES displays on the event floor, I noticed many companies are tackling the idea of implementing smart technology into their business head on.

And while one may think that these innovations would come solely from technology companies, CES proved that this is no longer the case. Many companies presented their take innovative consumer tech solutions; from beauty to food.

Two companies that caught my eye through their unique tech showcases and their innovative approach to data were Neutrogena and L’Oréal.

Despite not being considered technology companies in the traditional sense, both companies were able to manipulate critical consumer data from research and analytics to create unique and innovative products in their respective fields; including a customize facemask from Neutrogena and a wearable pH Level Sensor and application from L’Oréal.

 

4. Healthcare Technology for the Future

Technical healthcare solutions and products were big themes at CES, especially around data. Not only were the presentations and panels discussing these innovations informative in terms of describing the capabilities these products and how they will change healthcare in 2019 but were enlightening on how these organizations used data to make important business decisions.

Stakey, a leader in hearing solutions and technologies, proved to be a true innovator in 2019 with their Livio AI hearing aids, which monitor the wearer’s vitals, and detect any heath irregularities, such as a fall or capricious heart rate fluctuation, that can be relayed in real time to an application or a designated healthcare professional.

These hearing devices track critical user data in an application that acts as an initial sensor for any drastic health changes. Not only does this proactive approach help to improve the livelihood of their customers but sets Starkey apart as an innovative leader in their field.

Other tech solutions, such as robotic prosthetics, autonomous wheelchairs, and robots from Samsung offering to manage the health and wellbeing of those in need of care, were on full display.

Wrapped around these health tech trends, we must always be aware of how data has become increasingly impactful in these areas and how businesses are using information in the most effective and efficient ways possible.

 

5. Data is Everywhere – Are You Utilizing it?

An overwhelming takeaway from CES was the overall impact that data had on all the conference presenters. As the improvement of technology offers uncapped potential for companies, it becomes more important for a business’ workforce to have essential data skills to stay ahead in their respective fields.

To unlock the full potential of the data revolution, businesses need to transform the entirety of their organizations into data advocates. Training them to appreciate, analyze and apply data in a commercial way. So, in turn, they can make better, more informed decisions for the business.
